![[-] captmarx 56 points 11 hours ago GamerGate was a consumer rights campaign that criticized the close relationship between game devs and game critics because people were paying money for well-reviewed games that were s---. Absolutely no different than any other consumer campaign against colluding business interests that are making inferior products. Like, what if a bunch if people bought cars off of normally reliable advice from a reviewer, only to find out it breaks constantly and the reviewer was given hotel spa days by the car manufacturer. Is it on the level of child hunger in Africa? No. Is it still a valid thing for an upset consumer to want to do? Of course. Unfortunately, the first game dev called out was Zoe Quinn, who is an SJW darling. Rather than restricting their discussion to whether there are improper relationships between reviewer and dev, they entirely made this a discussion about misogyny in gaming. Compounded further, it seems they desire to have a quid pro quo relationship with devs, where they get goodies and ideological wins with devs in exchange for high ratings and not calling devs bedfellows with r--- culture. And because SJWs have been working for decades to manipulate public debate and GamerGate isn't mainly composed of activists but instead grumpy consumers, this narrative, that GamerGate is about hating women, has actually because the prevailing story. Now gamers both have s----- games and a terrible reputation and don't really know what to do. Every SJW article gives a sentence dismissing unethical behavior among devs and critics and the rest of the time taking about how GamerGaters hate women and are rapists. So that's what GGers talk about, defending themselves from accusation rather than giving a positive case for why devs and critics shouldn't be in bed together. Which may be the overall strategy for then-they want to keep their oversized influence about what is and isn't sexist in games and they want to be in bed with devs so they get what they want The reason you probably don't know what GG is, is because there are two narratives of what's going on that are so vastly divergent they seem to have little do with each other. But the history's there and the order of events matter and give a clear view of what the f--- happened. I'm not a gamer or anti-feminist, but it's been fascinating to watch how this discourse developed.
