It’s meant to be representative of how a leader is easier to target, invalidate, and dismiss, which would in effect invalidate and dismiss the group and message as a whole. In contrast, no leader means that there is no focal point to target and thus it’s harder to dismiss as a whole.
Leaders would be needed if this were an organized group. As it is, I don't see any advantage to having one or several. If people want to band behind someone, they're free to, but right now, GG is like a swarm of bees: You might swat one down, but the rest will be fine and just really pissed off.
