So there's this Tumblr tag that's been going around a lot, I believe it has something to do with an ongoing in-joke about people who show up late to things because they had to get starbucks on the way, that got turned into this Homestuck fanart by Crystaly and became a thing of its own from there (Reddit thread).

Anyone else got more on the backstory?

The whole 15 minutes late with Starbucks thing lead straight back to the "white girl" stereotype, you know, white iPhone, name brands, stuff like that.

Seems like it could end up being another morph of the running late for school with a slice of toast in your mouth meme.

"15 minutes late with Starbucks" is kinda seen as a more calm version of the toast-in-mouth fad. It is more like "Hey guys, what did I miss?" as opposed to "Shit! I'm late!" The recent popularity with pairing it with Homestuck is from the last few updates: Jade shows up after a long absence, but without John who was supposed to be with her. So people joked that he would show up 15 minutes late with Starbucks. Then, exactly 15 pages later, John finally shows up, complete with a cup of Starbucks on the table next to him

Given how this joke was already making its round before the update with John's return, it wouldn't suprise me if Hussie did this intentionally. Wouldn't be the first time.

This became so prominent on /r/Homestuck that the picture to the right on the page was a picture of a starbucks cup SBAHJified.

But seriously, I've mostly seen this with Homestuck and Homestuck bloggers, mostly since the end of Act 6 Act 5. Less so in other contexts, too.

I don't really care about the state of the comic itself, I mainly scroll Tumblr for the yaoi. DaveJohn is without doubt my OTP. #Feels

The idea of "15 minutes late with Starbucks" is derived mostly from the tumblr pastime of hipster-bashing. On tumblr, hipsters are mocked openly for their (usually) single-topic blogs that range from pictures of food to simple photography and amateur instagram pics. A common trend among these hipster blogs would be to take a picture of a Starbucks cup and post it online, so slowly and surely hipsters on tumblr became associated with Starbucks.

As an extension of this, white girl jokes became popular as well considering that the "stereotypical hipster blogger" is a white, teenaged girl. the white girls tag and the white girl tag are full of these kinds of jokes. (Click at own risk. NSFW content and pictures of white girls holding a cup of Starbucks are somewhat common in these tags as well)

Predating this, and somewhat similar to this 15 minutes late meme, is the slang term "Seattle Late", which is a term that actually describes the event of someone arriving late because they stopped to get coffee.

I'm late in replying because I had to get some Starbucks, but it's a trend among those in high school. It's more prominent in zero period classes where the late kids always have Starbucks in hand when they walk into class. We always make fun of them and the teachers are always mad at them, telling them that if they didn't go to Starbucks, they wouldn't have been late.
