Other Subcultures

How come nobody has mentioned Lord Inglip yet? the Dectrip Faith isn't only a subculture, it also has a whole mythology- in fact I suppose that's kind of the point. With every Inglip related comic that gets over 100 votes and thus becomes canon the story grows more complex. So much so that there has been somewhat of a "schism" recently. Some redditors were afraid that the stuff involving other Captcha gods (Chydrego, Leanex, Inglex, Oxallo etc.) was getting too complicated for newcomers and some of the more casual Gropagas, so a seperate subreddit (/r/Trathira) was created for multi-god comics so that /r/Inglip can be reserved for the kind of Inglip comics that tend to end up on memebase.

Let me take a stab at this. I'll use /vp/, the Pokemon board, as an example.

/vp/ – Pokemon (Sub-Culture icon)

/vp/
Moot created the Pokemon board on 4chan due to the abundance of Pokemon threads on /v/, which he had been recieving complaints about…(Brief history of board, important details, etc.)

/vp/'s Submemes
Gary Oak: Notorious for showing up at inconvenient times, Gary has a great deal of popularity on /vp/. In this subculture, Gary is primarily used to attack disliked threads. His face is photoshopped onto various images which are used to pack the target thread to the image limit in a practice known as "Garybombing".
Belle Farting: Originally a feeble troll attempt, constant reposting has cemented this mini-meme into /vp/ for better or for worse. Is has expanded to any image focusing on someone's rear end or of someone bent over, and is often accompanied by the phrase "/vp/, I gotta fart suberbad!"
U r simgle, master?: This also began as a mild troll thread, and was reposted daily for weeks. Even now, there is a U r simgle thread every other day or so. The "simgle" misspelling was simply a typo that cottoned on.

Or something like that.

Would medieval role players be a sub-culture? Its a way of life for some.

Or what about eating food. That sure spread across the world pretty damn fast.

That sounds like LARPing, which in that case is not really an internet thing, but they're usually organized through online means and shared online.

I'm still up for otakus and hikikomoris though. Otakon is a site filled with Otaku (anime fans) , and hikikomoris are people who seclude themselves from society (the japanese version of people who live in isolation due to usually social and emotional problems).

And I think that if you get ONE guy from a board in 4chan to do a thing on that board, it's gonna be biased, so I vote for having 3-4 guys from different places, in addition to the one person from that respective board, as to avoid bias.

And I also think that there should be:
Hackers – Those that build code, commonly whitehat hackers
Crackers – Those that "crack" and destroy code, like LulzSec, i.e. blackhat hackers
Hacktivists – I'd mosh them together with crackers, because they use mostly illegal methods to achieve either a good or bad cause

OK. Maybe alot of you don't remember this but there were alot of battle Sims on the AOL chat rooms back in the day. Specifically Pokemon and DBZ ones. All text based. I used to play it frequently. Also there was a culture of "scrolling" on the chat rooms as well. I was impressed as a kid.

I like the idea of trying to get more organization to the conceptsof subcultures, but I see a lot of people just tossing out "x hobby = subculture" which really isn't accurate at all.

MLP:FiM is a definite subculture.

As someone mentioned, Youtube is a distinct subculture.

I believe the entire Rageface comic set could also be viewed as a subculture, though I can only see the Inglip stuff as being contained within that subculture. Much like how a spinoff to a star trek series is still considered part of the star trek culture.

The overall concept is good, but there's a LOT of gray area that is going to make plotting out boundaries very difficult.

EDIT: As for "Garry's modders" stuff, perhaps Source games/modding should be considered the subculture, and then the garry's mod stuff would be a spinoff of that culture?

^This.

There's no point in having this discussion if we aren't making some headway on this.

What we know:

-YTMND, Youtube, MLP, Valve, Ms Paint Comics (Rage Comics), Memebase (Advice Dog) are definite subcultures. (There's others, but these were the only ones I could think of right now. 4 chan and anime are too, but I know very little about them to have a professional opinion about them.)

While there are subcultures like Facebook, we can't really call them meme subcultures because they haven't really produced a lot of memes (5 or more memes).

-Where we're going to get in trouble is where we have memes that fill multiple subcultures (mudkips started in deviantart and 4 chan, but is technically part of the pokemon subculture.)

While there's already been a decent amount of work done already because they are organized by submemes, there's a lot of reorganizing that would be needed to better categorize this. It would be really nice to see some more organization because if you wanted to learn about the different YTMND memes for example, you could go to the YTMND subculture page and find it there.

Just some thoughts…

You forgot ">Implying owls are birds" and "Ticklish Aerodactyl".

Jackcandle, you made the Youtube hub page. How about renaming it as the youtube subculture page and let's just start with that one. If we can get the page looking good enough, we can use that as an idea as for what we're looking for with these subculture pages.

Here's a few more that I think go under Youtube:

Rickroll, Old Spice Guy, Like/Dislike Balance Game, Gingers have Souls, Soulja Boy, (crap, this list is going to be really long.)

Ones that are going to be hard to categorize and will have to be taken on a case by case basis: Homo Kid, Jessie Slaughter, Boxxy,

Basically most viral videos that became memes would fall under this category since youtube is primarily responsible for making them viral.

This one is going to take a while to get set up, but I think we will be pleased with the end result. If you need help with the article, I'm happy to help out.
