I don't. He's going through a learning experience. It's a good thing. sure, it's a harsh experience, but some people don't ever go through one and when they do they come out of it for the better, for both them and everyone else. you should feel good for the guy.

unless that "i don't know" bit was a deflecting answer, then he won't learn anything. THEN you should feel bad for him.
