I just don't understand why Gamestop would do this….

If it was for advertising, the game already had a LOT of hype to begin with. (Heck, this actually for some people decreased the hype, because "it's so easy, a kid can do it, this game stinks, where's Melee!?")

But… all this will really do in the end, is damage their already questionable reputation….

People don't like to be lied to like that. So this might cause people to outright stop going to Gamestop.
