My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks A Review and a Mouthful to Say With Rainbow Rocks hitting the theaters today I've deiced to write up this little review to give anyone on the fence about seeing it a little idea of what to expect. There are not any spoilers so don't worry about me ruining the tens minutes of the movie not already seen in promos Equestria Girls was a fun little romp that detoured away from the main canonical storyline of Friendship is Magic on a whimsical adventure through a world where the good lord above used a few more crayons when designing humans. While far from perfect it was a highly enjoyable feature that made up for its flaws by being consistently funny and entertaining through its relatively short running time. Rainbow Rocks returns us to the setting of the first with the added bonus of improving upon nearly every aspect of the original picture. From the villains to the plot nearly everything feels more properly thought out with the movie in general feeling more fleshed out thanks in no small part to the extended running time. Flaws do remain of course but when pitted against the overall quality of the final product they seem minimal in comparison and ultimately leave you feeling that they learned quite a few things from the first go around. Perhaps one of earliest things that seemed immediately improved was the choice of villains for the movie. While Sunset Shimmer wasn't terrible as the primary antagonist she lacked the screen presence of Adagio, Aria, and Sonata who make for much more enduring characters. Conversely Sunset Shimmer works far better as a former villain trying to reconcile with her past transgressions than being a villain in her own right. With friendship being such a strong central theme of the series her redemption plays well with the story and makes her feel much less bland this time around. This film also had far better pacing thanks to a much more standard run time of an hour and twenty-minutes. At times the first film felt like it was rushing things just to squeeze everything in while some scenes felted superfluous as if they needed to pad the run time. With this installment everything progresses much more naturally and feels overall more eamless. The music and comedic element are as fantastic here as they ever have been in the series. Of particular note is how they really dug deep breaking out references from as far back as season one up until the most recent episodes. It is quite a treat for long time fans and manages these nice call backs without them feeling obnoxious or pandering for that matter Now despite my gleaming accolades this move is not all peaches and cream and has its share of faults. Flash fails to redeem himself in any meaningful way with this ation. In fact through some dazzling feat of engineering they made his relationship subplot even more pointless and generic with his s Twilight from time to time. Of course there is some conflic but lack any apparent int is deliberate. Still, as a mild silver lining his presence in Rainbow Rocks is limited meaning he doesn't show up too frequently which his nice as he tends to drag things to a halt when he doe Other than him my only major gripe is that until Twilight shows up the movie doesn't really advance much. There are a few jokes to be had and some minor build up but it really doesn't take off until she comes around to kick things into high gea en time consisting almost entirely of him awkwardly bumping into egarding him towards the end but it doesn't really account to much. For some reason the wr rs feel a strong desire to include him in developing him beyond a stock love interest. Considering there is no way they could r foster a real relationship I suppose it is for the best but still I doubt i This movie really stands out for being what Equestria Girls really should have been and goes a lot further towards feeling like a theatrical feature rather than just a straight to DVD As divisi ve as the first one is I can not guarantee that this one will bring you back if you truly found the first one so despicable but I fe t makes a special that some how ended up in theat lot of strides towards living up to the potential of its parent series. The songs are as masterfully executed as they usually are and thanks to the musical theme of the movies find a welcome and consistent place. I won't say they are above and beyond what they have been in the past but even at their normal liked the first one you'll be pleasantly surprised by the remarkable increase of quality and if you didn't they stand as some of the best vou'll see in non-Disney animation. I think a major influence behind this picture is Hasbro's desire to resurrect Jem and the Holograms as a franchise. Hence "80's fashion nightmare" and "all those songs"… They're using this movie to 'prime the pump' for Jem's comeback. Not a criticism, just an observation.
