Well that's the problem for most of the video game industry isn't it?
In Nintendo's case they're not experimenting directly with gameplay but rather how people experience a game, and the various gameplay off sets from that. The Gamepad is pretty fucking experimental. The idea of having that much input there is pretty interesting and can add a lot of different gameplay styles and control schemes.
However because its so radically different and to far from the norm people reject it, preferring to stick with what they know is going to work. So people cry foul without really giving it a chance.
