Quoted from the article:
“I think bronies are a reaction to the U.S. having been engrossed in terrorism for past ten years, living on the edge the same way my generation lived through the Cold War. They’re tired of being afraid, tired of angst and animosity. They want to go somewhere a lot more pleasant.”

Look, the whole point of escapism in general (everything from reading a romance novel to, you know, watching MLP) is to get away from the harshness reality. People go to different places and worlds in books, games and TV and such. This isn't a recent phenomenon. This has been going on since the inception of the story. Even tales and yarns told around campfires offer escapism.
I watch this show for the quality of the show, it's characters, stories, and style and animation, not to mention the fan community and the works produced by it, not JUST to escape from the world.
I'm sorry if I'm long-winded, but the implications that I watch MLP because I'm afraid of the bad economy, pollution and terrorism in the world is a little ludicrous. I mean, it is a reason to do it, but not the ONLY reason.
