Channelers are just maniacs who lost the fight! …You could also say they're maniacs brave enough to give themselves onto the spirits buuuuut then there's also some dialog that implies they aren't channelling willingly so It's a 50/50, either they're stronger than maniacs because they can be possessed or they're weaker because they couldn't stop themselves from being possessed.
