Kind of insane until 3 years ago this woulda been considered impossible… with The Origami King using super strange loop-holes in order to introduce new characters WITHOUT creating new character designs. :|

IIRC he specifically suggested that the game try focusing on preexisting characters, and the devs ended up interpreting that in the most extreme way possible. Chuggaaconroy goes over it in a lot more detail during his video essays on Sticker Star:
