Yeah this is just wrong on it's face. The Book of Mormon is all about peoples who lived in the Americas before Europeans got there and the relationship those peoples had with the God of Abraham.
In fact LDS folk actually had very good relationships with the Native American tribes of the lands they settled. You see the LDS settlers didn't view those native tribes as savages incapable of civilization, but rather lost brothers and sisters who could be found again through love and kindness.
And so the tribes of the Intermountain West differentiated LDS folk and other white settlers by calling them different names, because the LDS folk made good neighbors while the other white folk didn't.
