On one hand, console wars are hypothetically supposed to push companies to better themselves and meet the rising standard.
On the other hand, it (hopefully) unintentionally leads to outright degeneracy, with stans of each company/console going ape-crap over who's console is better. The advertising that the big 3 (Nintendo, Sony, and especially Sega) all did in the 90s did not help this one bit.
The console wars we have today online are kind of a hold-over from that era of hyper-competitiveness where the companies themselves acted almost as degenerate.
Whether or not this all should be considered "ethical" is up for interpretation. Donkey Kong Country, Star Fox, or Yoshi's Island may not have looked as technically impressive as they did if it weren't for the all the mudslinging Sega was doing, but was it worth it if hundreds of children and teens got beat up at school for owning a SNES?
