Safe to say the Splatoon team simply wanted to make a new one while the Mario team is probably still thinking of what they want to do for the next one. Even though spinoffs and re-releases of older titles help make it so Nintendo is typically able to have a Mario or Zelda to sell almost yearly, the mainline entries tend to often have large gaps.
