I thought this sounded a bit off, because although the Ottoman Empire was dying at the time, it should have been able to deal with a country as small as Montenegro

So I did a bit of digging and it turns out that this was during the Great Eastern Crisis. So they were also fighting Serbia, Russia, Romania and Bulgaria at the exact same time.

The vast numbers of Ottoman dead appear to be standard, as they seem to be remarkably good at getting tens of thousands of their own men killed through disease and exhaustion, which probably explains the high number of battlefield casualties too..
