It's interesting, because Nintendo had a functional monopoly on the handheld gaming market since 1989, and all competitors have been discontinued long before now, this means that, with the discontinuation of the 3DS and the Switch being a hybrid rather than a dedicated handheld, the handheld era of gaming as a whole just ended right then and there.

It was a good 40 years (just a couple months short of 41) since the Microvision opened the doors to handheld gaming, but with the way technology's been progressing, it was only a matter of time before it came to a close. We're now able to feasibly make systems that can integrate home and handheld gaming at a relatively affordable cost, and I won't be surprised if Nintendo continues the hybrid direction in later generations.
