RT scores judge based on structure of plot, narrative consistency, and other things that an English teacher could grade. These things do not directly indicate weather you or anyone else will like something, but there is no way a critic could possibly know if you will like something.

This means there could be very good movies with low RT scores and very bad movies with high RT scores. There is a tendency for these scores to be related, but there is a lot of variability. Movies that are "mindless good fun" do poorly on RT, and we all know by now not to expect realistic sci-fi from Godzilla.

…then what is the practical purpose of RT's critic scores in the first place..? People want to know precisely that: if they will like something, and criticism is the second best way to know that after actually consuming the media. If a professional critic's opinion is not useful for that, then what for..? Structural plot, narrative consistency and other checklist things are pointless information if the movie is just not fun to watch.
