I remember FilthyFrank (or maybe Joji) saying something in the lines that approaching a japanese by talking about anime is like approaching an american by acting like a cowboy.

Japanese are really unique. Today I saw in the news the thing about their new emperor, I don't know if the news anchor chose the shots to emphasize their… uniqueness:

Anchor: There was cheering…
Camera: People politely and almost silently holding flags extended. As in holding its fabric straight in a non-waving motion

Anchor: There was protests…
Camera: A handful of people holding standard-looking yellow plaques with unassuming-looking handwriting and no pictures in almost militaristic fashion

Anchor: And, of course, maximum security for the event.
Camera: A lone guard outside his station petting his dog
