I still think the upvote/downvote bottuns and couner were better off below the image. It was simplier and more seamless, which is why that is where you see it in most sites. I do not see the practical purpose of moving that around. Just seems like a violation of the "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" rule.

I mean of all the layout changes I've seen over the past few months now, they continuously feel the need to fuck with things that are perfectly functioning before and arguably make it worse and harder on the eyes. This is another one of them. They're about as bad early YouTube about randomly fucking with the layout.
