Putting aside the emotional attachments people have to the issues of this comic, there is an industry around presenting the idea that money spent for overpriced thing is going to some vague cause when in truth said cause gets little or nothing. We live in a world where it would be possible for this scenario to happen, at the very least. I recall a supposed pro-choice charity that took donations and then bullied abortion-seekers instead. The lesson is to not give your donations to, or buy the overpriced crap for 'good causes' unless you see the fine print. There are predators and exploiters out there.

Joseph Stalin was not. He criminalized homosexuality in 1934 after what really was a period of comparative acceptance that quickly degraded after Old Joe took power. It was labeled a diseased, homosexuals were thrown in gulags and worked to death alongside all the other political prisoners and innocents.

And screw you, gulags were death camps. Its like saying Auschwitz wasn't a death camp: a lie perpetuated by horrible people. Believe it or not, evidence came up after the Nazis were put down, people survived them and reported them, bodies are found, and mountains of evidence shows that they were totally death camps. Denying that is just as bad as denying the horrors of the holocaust. Sure they didn't have gas showers, but given the conditions they didn't need them.

Some were literally convicts. Some were just not supportive enough of the leadership, some were just gay, some were innocent but since gulags don't have trials they were screwed anyway. The low death toll is in the millions, and that estimate is only low because they "release" people who are about to die so they don't technically count.
