Considering that we know that Lars and his misfit friends managed to steal a spaceship without the help of Steven and the Crystal Gems 'cause of the comic con previews, any tension that could've been built with not being able to visit Lars is nonexistent from a viewers perspective, which is why I'm confused that they even showed that clip in the first place, since it wasn't the first thing they came back too.
In terms of a narrative perspective, it's hard to say, if Connie didn't feel so offended, visiting Lars might've been the first thing the two would do together the next morning.
If anything at this point, I think it's fair to criticize the storyboard artist for not coming up with enough concepts for the main plot in this supposed final season.
