Historically speaking, it was common in cultures around the world to portray the moon in a feminine manner, and the sun in a masculine one. This, of course, extended to the gods they worshiped. Cultures like the ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Indians all had primarily feminine moon gods and primarily masculine sun gods.
