To be fair, reading from actual books on purpose is an underappreciated effort these days.

Ash has basically had his face glued to a Pokedex for the last . . . I don't even know how many years. He was ten when he left home, so at most he has a fifth grade education.

Reading anything but simple signs may in fact be a novel concept for him.
