I actually saw a Youtube video discussing exactly that, and it's actually feasible as long as one of two condition is true. Either the scabbard is loose enough that the blade is allowed to exit at an angle upon the last few bits are exiting, or if you pull the scabbard with your other hand while the first is pulling the blade. Now granted, the latter is a technique almost nobody actually uses, but the former is much more likely in most shows, as 90% of cartoon scabbards are loose fitting.
