I feel like SBR was written with a lot of 1800's philosophy in mind, with the central one, shown most clearly in the Sugar Mountain chapters, being Kierkegaard's ideas of infinite resignation and the knight of faith. Sugar Mountain's quote about those who are willing to give up everything ultimately gaining everything is basically the entire idea summarized pretty succinctly.
