I actually really liked that Adam was forced to join Cinder. Not only does it paint a picture of Cinder's power and control, but it portrays Adam as quite principled and shows his more honorable side

That might be true. But I still believe he was motivated by race more than anything in this case. He has no problem sacrificing his own men as as we've already seen over and over. In Black Trailer he was more than willing to sacrifice "collateral damage" too.
