JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - Anime was a MIstake (Except for Jojo)

I believe he said he dislikes otaku pandering because it's basically "appealing to the lowest common denominator" among fans of Japanese animation. Miyazaki's whole deal is he prefers to make movies with a heavy focus on characters that could feel realistic in some way, while some anime the characters feel really flat and only made to appeal to a specific group of otaku.

Basically the important thing here is to have really likable characters in a work of fiction, and this doesn't have to apply just to anime. A similar thing could be applied to American made cartoons by saying "having a show full of nothing but bad Spongebob knock offs is just lazy, actually try and be original in some way and make your characters your own."

He said something along the lines of not liking otakus in the anime industry, so people exaggerated it as a joke to "Miyazaki doesn't like anime."
