Probably because as humans, they can’t wrap their heads around the idea of them being a singular entity yet two entities all at the same time.

So they would use “they/them” because they’re using those pronouns traditionally.

But hey, that's just how I'd make sense of it, since all the rest of the gems, fusions included, refer to themselves and each other as hers.
